April 2024 – University of Winnipeg Data Breach, 6 Leadership Styles and When to Use Them
April Insights
Hi Everyone –
Trying something new here. A once monthly email to your inbox with a mix of:
- New and noteworthy developments in technology and cybersecurity
- Leadership tips / articles / resources I’ve come across in the last month
- Relevant events / webinars / happenings
My goal is to bring value to other Winnipeg executives and business leaders. If you’re not getting value from this, just reply with a quick ‘not for me’ and we’ll remove you from future mailings.
If you have something that should be included in a future edition, let me know! Is your business doing something new? Is there an event other local leaders should be aware of?
Thanks for continuing to make Winnipeg a vibrant, exciting place to work and to grow a business.
Michael
Technology / Cybersecurity News
- The big local story is the recent cyberattack on The University of Winnipeg. Questions are being raised around how this happened, data retention policies (it appears that stolen data dates back over 20 years), as well as potential legal liability.
https://globalnews.ca/news/10390904/university-winnipeg-cyber-attack/ - AI is all the rage right now. While much of the focus is on the very real productivity improvements AI can bring, I do worry about what it will mean for cyber threats. Bad actors can leverage AI to improve the sophistication and quality of their attacks. This article does a good job summarizing how we might counter AI-based attacks:

Leadership reads worth your time
- This HBR article on 6 common leadership styles and when to use them really resonated with me. I could think of specific instances where I’ve used each of them:
