September Insights โ€” Deepfakes Are Calling, Loyalty Makes a Comeback and Growing Your Career From Within

Happy September, friends.

Every month, I sit down to write this, and every month, AI has shifted the ground a little more. This edition is no different. We’ve got security stories below to show how fast attackers are scaling with it, from AI-enabled breaches to deepfake calls that don’t even sound fake.

It’s not all bad news though, I also came across a couple of great leadership articles this month, including one that reframes how we think about loyalty and growing a career from within. Even as the technology races ahead, the things that build a strong team still take time.

Hope you enjoy this month’s selection!

Cybersecurity / Technology Articles

IBM’s latest data shows one in four breaches are now AI-enabled, up 56 percent from a year earlier, with malicious insider incidents climbing alongside. AI is inventing new kinds of attacks: making the old ones faster, cheaper, and easier to run at scale. The encouraging part buried in this piece is that cybersecurity has finally become a board-level priority, named a top-three concern by 93 percent of audit committees. The good news is that the fundamentals still hold. AI raises the speed and volume, but a layered plan built on strong identity controls, tested backups, and continuous monitoring is still what keeps these attacks from turning into breaches.

AI isnโ€™t the biggest cybersecurity problem. People are

Gartner found that 41 percent of organizations faced a deepfake paired with social engineering on an audio call, and 35 percent on a video call. We are past the point of training people to spot a fake voice, because the fakes are now good enough that spotting them is no longer a reliable defense. We’re always talking about security awareness training and its importance to staying current on the latest attacks, but these stats are huge. Check out this article to learn more about it.

Leadership & Personal Growth

Lately, we’ve been hearing that loyalty is dead and the smart move is always the next one. This piece argues the opposite, pointing to John Ternus stepping into Apple’s top job after twenty-five years there. He didn’t climb by chasing the next title. He earned two decades of trust in one place, and that trust is what put him at the top. Opportunity is built on trust, and trust takes time to earn. That’s what I hope I’m nurturing at 365Tech: a steady, trusted environment where our people can learn, grow, and move up to be the best they can be!

Why Appleโ€™s next CEO shows you donโ€™t need to โ€˜move out to move upโ€™

This is the most level-headed thing I’ve read on AI strategy in a while. Boudreau’s argument is that AI has moved incredibly fast, but the ground underneath it, the standards, the tooling, the institutions, is still shifting, which means a lot of companies are building on foundations that haven’t set yet. He provides some great insights and advice and highly recommend this read!
